MANAGEMENT BOARD
RESOLUTION 01-2003
The Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat
Partnership Management Board finds:
Whereas, the Agulowak River within
the Wood Tikchik State Park is a vital waterway for fish, wildlife
and people; and
Whereas, after careful review and
consideration the Board of Directors finds as follows:
1. The Agulowak River provides
passage for an annual average of 1.4 million salmon annually into
the Wood-Tikchik State Park.
2. The Agulowak River provides
important spawning habitat for an average of 200,000 sockeye and
other salmon, rainbow trout, grayling and Dolly Varden.
3. The Agulowak River is an
important area for subsistence and recreation by local residents.
4. The Agulowak River is
internationally known for its high quality sport fishing and is
heavily used by sport anglers, fishing guides and lodge operators.
5. The Agulowak River and
the surrounding land have near pristine habitat quality.
6. The Agulowak River corridor
is privately owned, and some private landowners are interested in
selling their property.
7. Development along the
Agulowak River corridor that is incompatible with the area’s
current qualities could have a major impact on sustainability of
the area’s natural resources and historic human uses.
8. Protection of the
Agulowak River corridor is a high priority of the Wood-Tikchik
State Park.
9. The Nushagak/Mulchatna-Wood/Tikchik
Land Trust and The Conservation Fund are working with local
landowners to protect the conservation values of the Agulowak
River corridor.
Therefore, by unanimous consent the
Management Board of the Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat
Partnership
resolves:
1. The conservation values of
the Agulowak River corridor should be perpetually protected
through easement, fee acquisition or other acceptable agreement.
2. To support and encourage
the Land Trust, The Conservation Fund and others in their work to
conserve the values of the Agulowak River Corridor.
3. To raise funds for this
conservation project.
